Visiting the South: What to Expect in Charleston South Carolina

Charleston, South Carolina is a southern city filled with an abundance of activities that anyone, no matter what their passion or hobby, is sure to fall in love with the Holy City. In fact, Charleston is a booming area filled with mouth-watering cuisine, fine art galleries, live music, and scenic views all wrap in that well-known southern hospitality. It’s no wonder that Charleston has been voted America’s Favorite City for years.

Downtown Charleston

Downtown Charleston is the mecca for all things historic, fun, whimsical, and educational. And since everything in the downtown area is within walking distance, you can safely leave your vehicle at an automated parking lot and talk about all the sights via foot. Take your time as your walk through cobblestone streets and enjoy all that this city has to offer, which is a lot!

Beaches Galore

Charleston is a coastal city lined with beautiful beaches where you can relax on the sand or splash around in the ocean. Folly Beach is one of the most popular dues in part to its less commercialized and laid back feel. When visiting Folly, make sure to stop at Buck’s, a fun and funky convenience store. A few of the other beaches to check out are Isle of Palms, Kiawah Island, Sullivan’s Island, and Seabrook Island.

The Surrounding Areas

While downtown is the area most people think of when they visit Charleston, the surrounding cities have just as much to offer and can be a breath of fresh air when you want to get out of the hustle and bustle of the big city. Mount Pleasant and West Ashley, for example, are a few miles outside of downtown Charleston and provide their own unique vibe. Mount Pleasant is an upscale city that is filled with million dollar homes and high-quality shopping. West Ashley has an art community vibe with stunning street art.

Farmer’s Market

Charleston and the surrounding areas are filled to the brim with farmer’s markets that occur throughout the week. One of the biggest in the area takes place on Saturdays in Marion Square located in downtown Charleston. The Sunday Brunch Farmer’s Market, which occurs Sunday morning behind the Pour House on Maybank Highway, is a smaller market but still features a variety of merchants and live music. Mount Pleasant, West Ashley, Folly Beach all have their own markets. Mount Pleasant takes place on Tuesday evenings, and both West Ashley and Folly’s farmer’s market occur on Wednesday evenings.
