Huawei, the world’s biggest manufacturer of telecoms equipment, is under intense scrutiny after the United States advised allies not to use its technology due to fears it might be a car for Chinese spy surgeries.
“The tactical challenge of China’s place in the age of globalised technology is a lot bigger than only 1 telecommunications equipment company,” Fleming, among Britain’s top three spies, stated in Singapore.
“It’s a first order tactical challenge for us all,” he explained. “We have to comprehend the dangers and opportunities from China’s technological deal.”
GCHQ is currently Britain’s main eavesdropping bureau and has a close relationship with the US National Security Agency and with all the eavesdropping agencies of Australia, Canada and New Zealand in a consortium known as”Five Eyes”.
In what some have in relation to the Cold War arms race, the United States is concerned that 5G dominance would provide any global rival such as China an advantage Washington isn’t prepared to accept.
5G, which will provide much faster data rates and become the foundation stone of many businesses and networks, is a revolutionary technology, Fleming said.
“5G is going to be among the most significant and impactful technologies of this or any age,” he stated, adding that he wanted a diverse supplier marketplace.
“A marketplace consolidated to such an extent that there are just a very small number of viable options will not make for great cyber-security. That is no matter whether these options are Chinese, Western, or from someplace else,” Fleming said.
Guo said the United States failed to represent the whole world and known for equipment makers, network operators and governments to work together to devise trustworthy criteria to manage cyber-security risks.
